



One of the most versatile musicians of his generation, Thibault Back de Surany has performed throughout Europe as well as in Japan, Taiwan, Colombia and the United States.
He founded the Salzburg based period-instruments ensemble The Van Swietens, which combines “early and “new” music. Their first CD dedicated to Beethoven was released by IBS in 2024, to critical acclaim. They have performed in La Chaise Dieu Festival in France and will play for the opening of the Salzburg Festival 2026.
Since 2025, Thibault is Associate Conductor of the Ensamble Continuo in Bogota.
He worked as assistant conductor at the Bach Akademie in Stuttgart (2017-2020) , the OJEX in Badajoz, Spain (2022-2024), Les Musiciens du Louvre, under Marc Minkowski or the Taipei Academy Music and Festival, under Leonard Slatkin.
He has conducted orchestras such as the Ensemble Intercontemporain, the Ensemble Modern, the Freiburger Barockorchester, the Real Orquesta de Sevilla the Orquesta de Extremadura, Les Musiciens du Louvre or the Luxembourg Chamber Orchestra.
Conducting Fellow at the Aspen Music Festival in 2017, Thibault graduated with honors from his Masters studies under Hans-Christoph Rademann and Steffen Leißner in Dresden, and had mentors such as Larry Rachleff, Leonard Slatkin and Roger Norrington. In 2023 Thibault obtained an Artist Diploma from the OAcademy.
